With still a cold chill in the air and a crunch underfoot on frosty mornings, the evenings starting to grow longer and small bursts of life emerging in our gardens. We are most certainly inching towards Spring, and we couldn’t be happier!
As well as opening our doors for a host of Winter Getaways over February and March, we are also delighted to be preparing for warmer climes in our gardens. Thanks to our Polytunnels allowing us to keep the growing going even longer into winter, as well as needing to grow plenty of fresh produce for our upcoming Wedding season and for our sister site over in Dublin, The Park Café – the fun never stops at the Gooseberry Gardens!
This week has seen Beets, Radish and Rocket return to our fields, which should be ready for harvesting in a little under two months. We’ll continually plant these seeds throughout spring, and will hopefully have a constant supply up to Autumn. As ever, we strive to be self sufficient and sustainable, so our calendar will see these crops move throughout the gardens as our planting schedule widens.
Visitors to the Lodge during our Winter Getaway events are welcome to tour the grounds and see what we’re getting up to – that is if you have time to spare between the Woodland Walks through Deerpark Forest, trips to the Lough Lamor Boating Lake and turns around the Virginia Park Golf Course. Whether you pay the gardeners a visit or not, you’ll be sure to enjoy their hard work when sitting down for lunch or dinner!
